What Is a TCAR Procedure?

Transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) is a state-of-the-art, minimally-invasive procedure to treat carotid artery disease.

This condition occurs when the carotid arteries on either side of the neck become narrowed or blocked due to plaque buildup. If left untreated, carotid artery disease can increase your risk of stroke.

However, with TCAR, we can effectively restore blood flow to the brain, reduce the risk of stroke and improve overall vascular and cardiovascular health.

TCAR offers several advantages over traditional carotid surgeries.

Unlike open surgeries that require a large incision in the neck, TCAR involves a smaller incision just above the collarbone. This access point allows for direct visualization and precise placement of a stent to restore normal blood flow.

The procedure also uses a unique flow reversal system to protect the brain from potential plaque dislodgement during the intervention.

You deserve innovative vascular and cardiovascular services that lead to reduced invasiveness, shorter recovery times, and improved outcomes. That’s why we are leaders in TCAR.

TCAR Procedure Steps

A TCAR procedure involves the following key steps

1. Access

Our highly skilled vascular and cardiovascular team will make a small incision just above the collarbone, providing direct access to the carotid artery.

2. Blood flow reversal

To ensure the procedure's safety, a specialized system temporarily redirects blood flow away from the brain, protecting it from potential plaque dislodgement.

3. Filtering

A neuroprotection device is placed to capture any potential debris or plaque that may be released during the procedure, preventing it from reaching the brain.

4. Stent placement

A carefully designed stent is inserted into the carotid artery to restore normal blood flow and provide long-term support.

Once the stent is successfully positioned, the blood flow is restored, and the temporary flow reversal is discontinued.

A Look at TCAR Procedure Success Rate

With our experienced team and state-of-the-art technology, TCAR at CardioVascular Health Clinic boasts an impressive success rate.

Studies have shown that TCAR significantly reduces the risk of stroke and provides excellent long-term outcomes.

In fact, according to the National Library of Medicine, “studies demonstrated high technical success rates of TCAR from 90.6% to 100%.”

Our commitment to patient safety and optimal results makes us the trusted choice for TCAR in central, western, and southern Oklahoma.

TCAR Procedure Post-Op Care

After your TCAR procedure, our dedicated team will provide comprehensive post-operative care and at-home instructions to support your recovery and ensure a smooth transition back to your daily activities.

For most patients, TCAR procedure post-op care includes

  • Monitoring vital signs and incision sites
  • Prescribing medications to manage pain and prevent infection
  • Advising on dietary and lifestyle adjustments for optimal recovery
  • Scheduling appropriate follow-up appointments to track your progress and monitor your results

Our compassionate vascular and cardiovascular specialists will be with you every step of the way, providing personalized care and guidance throughout your TCAR journey.

Potential TCAR Procedure Complications and Risks

While TCAR is safe and effective, like any medical procedure, it carries potential risks.

Some possible procedure complications may include the following

  • Blood clot formation
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Damage to blood vessels or nerves
  • Allergic reactions

However, it's important to note that the likelihood of experiencing these complications is relatively low, and our experienced team takes every precaution to minimize risks and ensure your safety before, during, and after your treatment with us.

Before your procedure, we will discuss any specific risks you may face based on your unique health history and current condition.

Testimonials

I’m about one month out and things are so much better. At my two week evaluation my symptom score had gone from a 27 to a 7, and I’m sure it’s even better now. That speaks volumes. Now that I’m post recovery, there is no incontinence, I go to the bathroom much less and there are no ED side effects like there are with other procedures. In regard to my quality of life, well, I don’t maintain my life based on my proximity to a bathroom anymore.

Professional staff working in a beautiful facility with great doctors who sincerely care about their patients. Without Dr. Schmidt's skill, I would have needed heart bypass surgery instead of a stent. Follow-up has been thorough. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Dr. John Schrader is the most personable doctor we know. He stays on top of my dads health care and is genuinely concerned about his health. We never leave his office with questions. He answers them all. Even questions we don’t think of. Always professional but never cold or bad bedside manner. In our opinion he is THE BEST around.

I came to Dr. Warren by a self referral for mals when it took me 8yrs 50+ doctors and thousands of dollars spent on no answers. My first visit I was scared I was just going to be gaslighted just like the past however I was pleasantly shocked when Dr. Warren immediately believed me. She took the time to review many disk I had brought from past tests. She never once dismissed me and listened to ever word I had to say. She scheduled one last test to confirm the diagnosis then I was scheduled for surgery right away. Surgery was a success and I can’t thank her and her staff enough. Dr. Warren truly saved my life.
