Don't let hemorrhoids control your life any longer.

Please continue reading to learn more about hemorrhoids, including their causes, symptoms, and effective, minimally-invasive hemorrhoid treatment options.

What Are Hemorrhoids?

In simplest terms, hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in the rectal or anal area.

They can be internal, occurring inside the rectum, or external, developing around the anus.

Hemorrhoids can cause discomfort, itching, pain, and bleeding, making everyday activities challenging.

At CardioVascular Health Clinic, we understand the impact of hemorrhoids on your quality of life and are dedicated to providing practical solutions, like hemorrhoid embolization, to alleviate your symptoms.

What Causes a Hemorrhoid?

Hemorrhoids can develop due to several factors that increase pressure on the veins in the rectal area.

Common hemorrhoid causes include

  • Straining during bowel movements
  • Chronic constipation or diarrhea
  • Prolonged sitting or standing
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Obesity
  • Aging
  • A sedentary lifestyle

Identifying the underlying causes of hemorrhoids is crucial in developing personalized treatment plans and preventing future occurrences.

Symptoms

The symptoms of hemorrhoids may vary depending on the type and severity of the condition.

Common hemorrhoid symptoms include

  • Pain or discomfort in the anal area
  • Itching or irritation in or around the anus
  • Rectal bleeding, especially during bowel movements
  • Swelling or lumps near the anus
  • Feces leakage

Hemorrhoid Symptoms in Males and Females

While hemorrhoid symptoms are generally similar for males and females, some variations may exist.

Hemorrhoid Symptoms: Male Specific

In males, symptoms may include blood in the stool or on toilet paper after wiping, pain or discomfort during bowel movements, a lump or swelling near the anus, and itching or irritation in the anal area.

Hemorrhoid Symptoms: Female Specific

In females, symptoms are similar and may include bright red blood during or after bowel movements, pain or discomfort during bowel movements, a sensation of fullness or pressure in the rectal area, and swelling or lumps near the anus.

Hemorrhoids Diagnosis

Our experienced hemorrhoid doctors will perform a thorough examination and evaluation to ensure the most appropriate treatment.

Hemorrhoid diagnosis may involve a physical examination of the rectal area, including a visual and digital rectal examination (DRE).

Additional diagnostic tests such as anoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy may be recommended to rule out other conditions or assess the extent of the hemorrhoids, especially if they occur internally.

Hemorrhoid Treatment Options

There are several available options for the treatment of hemorrhoids that can be tailored to your specific needs and personal diagnosis.

Common and effective external hemorrhoid treatment options include

  • Infrared coagulation: Applying heat to create scar tissue, cutting off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid, is completed.
  • Topical creams and ointments: Over-the-counter or prescription creams and ointments relieve itching and discomfort.
  • Sitz baths: Soaking the affected area in warm water reduces inflammation and promotes healing.

Common and effective internal hemorrhoid treatment options include

  • Hemorrhoid artery embolization: A minimally-invasive procedure where a small catheter blocks the blood supply to the hemorrhoids, leading to their shrinkage and elimination over time.
  • Rubber band ligation: The placement of rubber bands around the base of internal hemorrhoids to cut off their blood supply is used, causing them to shrink and fall off.
  • Sclerotherapy: Injection of a chemical solution into the hemorrhoid to shrink it is completed in an outpatient setting.

In rare and severe cases, a hemorrhoidectomy may be recommended, which is the surgical removal of external hemorrhoids.

No matter what treatment option is recommended for you, our dedicated team will guide you through the treatment process, ensuring your comfort and well-being every step of the way.

Testimonials

I’m about one month out and things are so much better. At my two week evaluation my symptom score had gone from a 27 to a 7, and I’m sure it’s even better now. That speaks volumes. Now that I’m post recovery, there is no incontinence, I go to the bathroom much less and there are no ED side effects like there are with other procedures. In regard to my quality of life, well, I don’t maintain my life based on my proximity to a bathroom anymore.

Professional staff working in a beautiful facility with great doctors who sincerely care about their patients. Without Dr. Schmidt's skill, I would have needed heart bypass surgery instead of a stent. Follow-up has been thorough. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Dr. Jim Melton and all the staff are fantastic. He is an excellent surgeon and his team is GREAT!!!! I just had surgery at the surgery center, I have only great things to say about my experience. Without him I really don't think I would be here to write this. If you’re looking for a good cardiovascular team, they are a 5 star for sure.

Dr. John Schrader is the most personable doctor we know. He stays on top of my dads health care and is genuinely concerned about his health. We never leave his office with questions. He answers them all. Even questions we don’t think of. Always professional but never cold or bad bedside manner. In our opinion he is THE BEST around.
Thank you Dr Schrader.

I came to Dr. Warren by a self referral for mals when it took me 8yrs 50+ doctors and thousands of dollars spent on no answers. My first visit I was scared I was just going to be gaslighted just like the past however I was pleasantly shocked when Dr. Warren immediately believed me. She took the time to review many disk I had brought from past tests. She never once dismissed me and listened to ever word I had to say. She scheduled one last test to confirm the diagnosis then I was scheduled for surgery right away. Surgery was a success and I can’t thank her and her staff enough. Dr. Warren truly saved my life.
