An arteriovenous fistula (AV fistula), or dialysis fistula, is a surgically created connection between an artery and a vein in the arm or wrist, providing a durable, long-lasting access point for hemodialysis. AV fistulas are preferred for long-term dialysis because they are less prone to infection and generally outperform other types of access, like catheters, in durability and longevity.

AV fistulas are the preferred access for hemodialysis because they:
1. Are more durable and longer-lasting than other access types.

3. Are internal, eliminating the need for external tubes, allowing patients to bathe, shower, and swim comfortably.
They also improve dialysis efficiency by increasing blood flow and facilitating more effective impurity removal.
To qualify for an AV fistula, you need an adequately sized vein and artery in your arm or leg. Our specialists will perform a physical exam and vein mapping via ultrasound or angiogram to evaluate the size and health of your blood vessels.
If they’re suitable, we’ll schedule your fistula procedure.
If your veins are not suitable, you may still qualify for an AV bypass graft, which uses a synthetic or bovine graft to connect the artery and vein indirectly.
Both AV fistulas and grafts connect an artery to a vein for dialysis access. Key differences include:
1. An AV fistula is a direct connection; an AV graft uses a synthetic or bovine graft to create an indirect connection.
2. AV fistulas take 6-12 weeks to mature; AV grafts are ready for use in 2-3 weeks.
3. AV fistulas are the preferred option if suitable veins are available; AV grafts are used when veins are too small or weak for a fistula.
