CardioVascular Health Clinic of Oklahoma performed the first outpatient TCAR, or trans carotid artery revascularization, in the U.S.
Johann Theron became the first person in America to receive a TCAR procedure after receiving devastating news a year ago.
According to Theron's doctors, Theron's carotid artery was 95% blocked and Theron should have suffered a stroke by this time.
"That's what made me sit up and say, that's severe, that's serious," Theron said. "He said, you should have and it's only a God thing that nothing happened to you."
Theron has a family history of heart problems, as well as a history of smoking and a poor diet.
"TCAR, or trans carotid artery revascularization, has been around since about 2016," said Dr. Jim Melton, co-founder of CardioVascular Health Clinic. "I was a principal investigator in bringing that from Europe to the states."
This outpatient procedure comes with the unique benefit of having no hospital stay in order to avoid the risk of infection.
"The efficiency as well as the lower cost is also a big deal," said Melton. "It's 30 to 50% lower cost when you compare it directly to a hospital cost."
